In sports, athletes compete against themselves, against each other, and they compete
against what has gone before. The same prevails for art.. Painters have always reflected
the cultures they live in, whether it was the domination of the sea in ancient Crete, the
16th Century Roman Catholic church, world wars and famine, or our own capitalism.
Today professional sports in America mirrors part of our culture, just as it did when
Bellows and Eakins painted. These contemporary combats lend themselves to my goal of using art to not only record our times, but to comment publicly on some of the
complexities of life.
